The problem is only growing with the value of cybercrime damage expected to hit €4.85 trillion annually by 2021, according to figures released by research firm Cybersecurity Ventures.
Last week, WhatsApp came under scrutiny after a Financial Times report revealed that hackers could insert spyware onto phones through a vulnerability in the app’s voice calling feature.
Meanwhile TheJournal.ie recently revealed that tens of thousands of Irish Facebook users had their contact details and other sensitive data accessed in a major hack of the social network last year.
