The Minister for Social Protection has been called on to develop an auto-enrolment system.

IRISH MEP BRIAN Hayes last week called on the Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty to start work on an auto-enrolled pension scheme for all workers in the private sector.

Earlier this month, the Citizens’ Assembly voted in favour of some form of mandatory pension scheme for employees to supplement the state pension.

It has been widely reported in recent years that there is poor levels of pensions coverage among the majority of workers in Ireland and a heavy reliance on state-funded pensions.

It has also been suggested that many people will have to work part-time in the future to supplement their income after they’ve retired.

Hayes suggested that to offset this ‘pensions time bomb’, every employee should be automatically enrolled in a pension scheme where they would put aside at least 1% of their monthly salary with matched funding from their employer.

This figure would eventually increase to 8% after a certain period of time, mirroring systems in place in other countries such as Australia.

With that in mind, we’re asking Fora readers this week: Should private pensions be mandatory for private-sector workers?
