Amazon has started hiring 500 extra people in Ireland
The high-tech jobs will be filled over two years.
ONLINE RETAILER AMAZON is to hire an additional 500 people at its Dublin base over the next two years.
The skilled positions will be across a number of facilities with the company saying that they will include data centre technicians, software engineers and customer support staff.
Amazon already employs about 1,700 people in Ireland with some of these new positions already being advertised online.
The company’s presence in Ireland has included Amazon developing an engineering base for new technologies that are used to support its retail operations and device development. Amazon Web Services was also launched in Ireland in 2006.
Amazon Ireland’s general manager Jeff Caselden said the company has already exceeded its planned growth targets for employment in Ireland.
“We’ve been an active member of the Irish technology community for over a decade now and Ireland’s creative culture and the diverse set of technical skills we’re able to recruit for here, make it an ideal location for our rapidly expanding business,” he said in a statement this morning.
“Some of our most exciting creations we have at Amazon stem from the work we do here for our customers.”
The jobs have been welcomed by both Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Jobs and Innovation Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor who called it a “fine illustration of our position as a world class driving force in new technologies.”
