The government is still confident it will bring speedy internet access to rural areas.

THE ALREADY-OVERDUE NATIONAL Broadband Plan was dealt another blow last week when Eir pulled out of the bidding process.

The telecommunications firm withdrew its bid for the State contract to deliver speedy broadband to rural areas because of “significant commercial issues and complexity within the tender process”.

Eir’s decision to exit left just one outfit, Enet, in the running to bring high-speed broadband to 540,000 homes and businesses in rural areas.

Since the news broke last week, pundits have questioned how long it will now take to complete the project, which was first mooted six years ago.

Both the government and Enet have insisted that the National Broadband Plan isn’t doomed and have made it clear that they’re committed to the project.

Department officials have even said that if all goes well with Enet, construction could begin in 2019 with a view to complete the project over a three-year period.

With that in mind, we’re asking Fora readers this week: Do you think the National Broadband Plan will be delivered by 2022?
