Poll: Should businesses get involved in political campaigns?

Some think companies shouldn’t weigh in on societal issues.

THE UK’S SUPREME Court will this week make a decision on whether to overturn a ruling that a Northern Irish bakery breached equality laws by refusing to write a gay marriage slogan on a cake.

The so-called ‘gay cake’ case concerning the Christian owners of the Ashers Baking Company has rumbled on for the guts of three years, with the initial judgement dating back to the same month as the passing of the gay marriage referendum in the Republic.

A number of businesses came out in support of the ‘Yes’ vote in 2015, including social media giant Twitter, which drew criticism from the Iona Institute, which said at the time that corporations should avoid commenting on Irish politics.

Similarly with the upcoming Eighth Amendment referendum, a number of outfits have started to publicly voice their opinions on the abortion vote at the end of May.

With that in mind, we’re asking Fora readers this week: Should businesses get involved in political campaigns?
