Netflix has a new rival as Amazon's streaming service launches in Ireland
The service will be available to Irish customers for €2.99 a month for the first six months.
AMAZON HAS ANNOUNCED that its video streaming service has launched in Ireland.
Amazon Prime Video is the company’s rival to streaming giant Netflix. Originally available in just the UK, America and a few others countries, its Irish launch coincided with the rollout of the service across 200 countries.
Irish customers can sign up for €2.99 per month for the first six months. After that initial period, it will cost €5.99 per month.
Like Netflix, Amazon Prime has a series of shows only available through its service. One of its most popular is the motoring show The Grand Tour, featuring former Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson.
Other series it shows exclusively are the award-winning Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle and The Man in the High Castle.
In recent months, Netflix has sought to consolidate its position of dominance in the online streaming space.
In October, the company announced that its customer numbers continue to grow, with around 86 million worldwide.

The company has around 200,000 customers in Ireland and recently introduced a feature where its users can download films and TV series to watch offline.
In Ireland, subscriptions to Netflix start at €7.99 a month.
The wider Amazon Prime service, which offers services such as one-day delivery on all items from the site, is not being rolled out to Irish customers.
Prime Video can be watched from a variety of devices, such as Android and iOS phones and tablets, and select LG and Samsung Smart TVs as well as online.
All of its content can be downloaded for offline viewing.
